The
room had quietened down, after viciously celebrating Arnav’s win. Arnav smiled
a devilish smirk – things like winning in organised street-fights were bound to
happen when you start of your career as a street fighter. But what these people
wont know, couldn’t hurt them. A siren suddenly blared through the room. It was
time to see who had placed bets on Arnav.
“Ms. Khushi Gupta placed a bet of
40 million dollars that Mr. Raizada would win, with just one injury to his face”
Arnav
let the announcers blare become a faint buzz in the background. He lightly
brushed his fingers against the small cut on his face. Something close to a
grin lit up his face. So much for throwing handkerchief’s in the dustbin –
challenge posed by Khushi Klepto Gupta wasn’t going to be as difficult as he
had thought.
And
in any case, he was Arnav Singh Raizada. And he always had to win, in the end.

“Leave us alone” Devyani commanded, as
Lavanya stood in the centre of the room, stark naked. The circle of girls
walked out quietly. It was futile to try and oppose Devyani, here she was at
power. This was her circle – vicious and merciless. The last to trail out was
Anjali. There was a certain indecisiveness in her steps, like she’d rather stay
back. Anjali could feel Lavanya’s eyes appealing mercy to her back, however
Anjali ignored it. She neared the door, and turned just in time to see the
blue-grey eye appealing for help. Then her eye fell on Devyani’s, looking back
at her with vicious, unveiled anger.
With
a fleeting stab of pity, Anjali closed the door.
Anjali
walked slowly back to her room. The stabbing of pity became deeper, like gouges
from her conscience. All the girls felt pity for the girl, but Anjali felt it
more deeply. For she knew what was happening in the closed door. For Anjali had
been there, behind the closed doors, once upon a time. She knew the acrid taste
of fear, the waves of disgust which followed.
What would your baba say? Suddenly her
conscience prodded her. The memories of the happier days hit her with full
force. She knew what her father would say. With a sigh, she wheeled back and
ran towards the door. She knocked politely and entered. The most horrific sight
greeted her eye. Devyani, half naked and Lavanya with tears down her eyes. For
a fleeting moment, she wondered if this was how she would have looked to an
outsider. She pulled herself together, and looked into Devyani’s eyes. “Devyani, the commissioner wants her”
pointing to Lavanya. “Won’t settle for
anything else”
Devyani
closed her eyes. She smiled a ghoulish smile. “The customer comes first.” They were free to go.
Lavanya
dressed with surprising speed, and the women quickly ran out of the door. “Thank You” she whispered shakily to
Anjali, once Devyani was out of earshot. “You
better be worth it” Anjali replied dryly, before walking back to her room.

Payal
was having a surprisingly good day. For starters, she had scraped enough money
to pay off Govindan. Today was a day to celebrate; the café was finally free of
debt. The sun seemed a little bright to her, and her smile, even brighter.
The
noise at the café abruptly thinned, and Payal looked up with surprise... and
then shock. The click-clack of the shoes against the cracked linoleum seemed to
her like a death knell.
Khushi
Kumari Gupta in her café, again.
“What can I get you, ma’am?” Payal asked with
supreme effort. Khushi looked back at the clearly frightened woman with
impatience. “I’m here to make you a
business deal. When will you shut off the café?”
The
noise in the café began to swell again. “Today
being Monday, I’ll be closing the café early, by around one”
Khushi
glanced at her watch, it was twelve-forty five right now. Which meant Khushi
would have to wait for 15 minutes. “Great,
I’ll wait here”
Twenty
minutes later, when Payal finally flipped the closed sign on the door, and
turned to Khushi, her fears were abruptly stilled.
“So Anamika” Khushi began,
examining her nails. “I have a business
proposition for you. You cook pretty darn well, and I have always wanted to own
a restaurant. What do you say, we collaborate? You will handle the kitchen,
I’ll handle the business. You will not have to worry about accommodations, and
you will be paid. Quite well.
Payal
glanced around the cracked linoleum floor, at the mismatched chairs. She
weighed in her mind all the pro’s and cons. She knew that if she took up the
job, her little lie would be caught. On the other hand... this was a chance to
finally escape this life of poverty and struggle. What should she do?
Payal
glanced at Khushi’s face.
“I’ll take it” Payal said, heaving a
sigh of defeat. “But...”
“We’ll fix the details of your
contract later. Please do not speak about our little discussion to anybody.
From now on, you are an employee of mine, and your first and foremost priority
should be that nobody should know what you are to me. I hope that is
understood?”
Payal
grimaced and nodded.
Khushi
walked out quickly, leaving Payal sitting weakly on the chair. With a sudden
sob, Payal ran into her kitchen. One little line running in her head, again and
again.
Nobody should know what you are to
me...
Unknowingly,
Khushi had touched a raw nerve with Payal. And for a moment, Payal hated
Khushi.

ReplyDeleteAnd now she wants her as part of her restaurant?? something's amiss yeah? guess we gotta wait n watch! :D
and Devyani!...i thought she would be the kind to do just that...doesn't surprise me...but what did surprise me was Anjali's support to Lavanya...m glad Lavanya has someone by her side...poor thing :(
And 40Mil!! Whoa! that was something...she just knew that he would win...and that too with one scratch on his face? interesting....does she know about his past??

ReplyDeleteAranv was a street fighter?! That makes him even more mysterious. Just when you think she's done her worst, Devayani manages to do much much worse. Anjali still hasn't become jaded enough to not help Lavanya. Hopefully they both can be free of Devayani before it damages them too much. I have a sneaky suspicion that Payal is Khushi's sister. I wonder if Khushi knows and more importantly if Shashi does. Thanks for the notif!

P.S: I'm sorry! I manage to mess up my first comment every time and I have to delete it.
Ok so thats what khushi had whispered to some one in the previous update! She placed a bet on Arnav and won...So no body knows alot of Arnavs past is it?
ReplyDeleteBoth Arnav and Khushi are like 2 sides of the same coin as of now..its difficult to say which one has an upper hand !
Then of course the payal and khushi convo has me confused..shall for wait for further updates on that one !!
And finally coming to La ..i really wish she is able to escape from the clutches of Devyani :(...
Aranv and Khushi's equation is becoming interesting after every update...
ReplyDeleteSo Payal is related to Khushi...
Devayani is brutal!!
waiting for Arnav's past to unravel....
yup, finally it was the bet that she whispered one of the mystery solved here.....
ReplyDeleteDevyani, what can I say about this character...she hathe great pleasure to torture the girls in a certain way to show who has the upper hand...
if she is the same person who help Anjali n drug her at the beginning then what can I say...
Anjali, certainly has a certain upper hand there...I have this feeling anyway...hope somethg happen where she can change this
seriously khushi is a mystery all in one...what is she up too
march2011
While I was not surprised about what devyani had in mind, I still felt grossed out!
ReplyDeleteThankfully Anjali still retains that voice that talks to her coz it indicates her soul is still alive!
Khushi made such a bet.. She is good! Arnav- street fighter! Interesting.
Payal n khushi is an interesting combination. So Payal has a history too! Who said that to her? Hmmm..
Ok now Devyani as I said didn't surprise me much, as expected... Anjali's action was not anticipated though but good on her part :)
ReplyDelete40 million !!!! Are you kidding me !!! I am not sure but does Khushi knows that Arnav was into street fighting??? And that reminds me, Arnav into street fighting?!?!?! Yaar ho kya raha hai??? Have to know more about Arnav....
Last bit left me confused? What was that? Khushi's sudden proposal to Payal - is she trying to show her gratitude?? and what about Khushi's comment on she doesn't want anyone to know....???
Seriously there is a lot of suspense built already.... need the next chapter super fast !!! :D

ReplyDeleteArnav has a past-a steet fighter..?
ReplyDeleteThat's interesting..!
What's the mystery of Payal..?
Does Khushi has some motive behind that deal..?
I dunno what to say about Devyani-just disgusting..
Two updates in a row.! thank u..!
Already waiting for the next part..
penguin143(IF)
The last part has left me with so many questions..
ReplyDeleteAre Payal and Khushi sisters ..Is that why Sashi din't say anything about the savior to Khushi?
And this new business proposal Khushi was surprising...what is she up to?
God Devyani is so disgusting..But for how long Anjali will come to the rescue of Lavanya...
And Khushi was so confident of Arnav's win..wow!
And by the way Arnav was a street fighter in the past??
ReplyDeletethis is getting more and more interesting! khushi betting that arnav would win but with a scratch on my face reminded me of fred and george betting that ireland woukd win but krum would catch the snitch...ahhh memories <3
ReplyDeleteYou understood the HP reference! I was reading HP before I wrote the chapter, so yeah, couldn't resist. #LOL

What has Payal gone through to make her feel raw when Khushi said that line? I feel sorry for her - I love what we've seen of her character so far. And I hope she escapes poverty....
ReplyDeleteAs for Khushi - she's back at her supercilious best - but what is she up to now? And she's won a whole heap of money too.
I wonder what Arnav will do now with Khushi? He is also a dark horse in this story - would like to know about him too.
Devyani: I have no words. Poor Lavanya is all I can say. Thank god Anjali interrupted...
You are building this story up so well... So many questions so much to come and I am glad you aren't ignoring any of your characters!
ReplyDeleteCont soon
very nice update...well written... continue soon..:-)
ReplyDeleteSurya.Ravi...:-)
arnav started as a street fighter....tht was definitely surprising. ... 40 million bet. .. either khushi does her homework or the woman is too smart n crazy at the same time. ...
ReplyDeleteas for payal I'm taking a wild guess tht shashi said something like tht to her before....n she is somehow related to him. ... Does Khushi know about all this?
Okay.....Arnav was a street fighter??? Woah. Talk about 'challenging' challenges! Khushi sure does know how to hand one out...and Arnav sure does know how to accept it....AND WIN. :D
ReplyDeleteI dont think I said it before...but you're Shyam looks so adorable here! Not to mention....he looks innocent too. Something I would never imagine Shyam could look like. :)
And the more I get to know about Devyani's character.....the more she disgusts me. But again.....I guess there's something interesting in the way you have etched out her character too.
I love the way you play with words. It definitely has an impact on me as I read the updates. Poor Payal.....wonder what the secret behind her hidden identity is.
Arnav was street fighter !!!! He is too sexy to be true ;) Khushi is one smart cookie :) Betting on Arnav and winning the money :) Boy this challenge is gonna be awesome . It is almost like the clash of the Titans!!!! It's gonna be fun watching these two . Wow that was great of Anjali to save Lavanya from Devyani ... Like seriously it was gonna happen .... Could feelLavayan's gratitude like anything ... Poor thing na ... Stuck like this .
ReplyDeleteDevyani's disgusting demeanor did not astonish me...I was contemplating something on those lines, since you had mentioned about her being deprived of the physical intimacy...Anjali rescuing the damsel in distress was heart warming...the bond between them has been sealed, unknowingly..
ReplyDeleteKhushi's bet about Arnav turning out to be true, had me gaping in wonder...I guess, she is aware of his backstory...
Payal took up the offer for a better life, ...and, K prefers it to be covert...have a feeling Payal is related to Khushi...will wait for more enlightenment, though...

ReplyDeleteSomEthing big is going on here....how the hell does khushi know her name?
ReplyDeletei am guessing payal is famiely .....may be a cousin or sister
Loved the feel of mystery...but the last line got me thinking...
Knowing khushi she does not take a decision just like that....is she planning something...loved this chapter..every bit of it
Meem17
By any chance are these 2 related and Khushi doesn't know
ReplyDeleteBut at least Khushi's helping payal somehow
& aww Anjali helped Lavanya!
Nice update!
Wow! Been out for almost 3 weeks... and there are 3 updates to read!
ReplyDeleteOk Arnav has a streetfighting past... ooh I can't wait for the next challenge between Khushi and him! Felt awful for La but glad that Anjali is sticking out for her! And what is all the mystery behind Payal? An update with a lot of questions in my mind!

Payal and Khushi seem to have a connection. Why does Khushi want to keep her buying the restaurant a secret?
ReplyDeleteArnav was a street fighter. Very intriguing character.
This Devyani is such a contrast to the one in the serial. This one is so hateful.
today you really made me fall in love with Anjali. She is the real woman here I can see it. The world has been very cruel to her. But instead of all that she has managed to keep the goodness and humanity alive in herself. Not only did she empathize and sympathize with Lavanya but also she acted on her conscience. Something we often ignore feeling that it happened with me let it happen with her what big deal or may not just help the other woman out of fear thinking of the consequences. I can see a sisterly bond formed between the two out of a common pain in ass that is Devyani. Lovely.
ReplyDeleteArnav stated off as a street fighter. That kind of sounds very weird and interesting theory. For Payal, my instincts are telling she is Khushi'sister, half sister/cousin sister/full sister that I don't know. But I feel that in some way she is related to Khushi more likely by the blood relation.
